Do Americans not know about Ali G?

So I was just watching TNT's NBA advertisement where Ali G was mock-interviewing Shaq and the rest of them. They seemed to be getting genuinely offended, especially Shaq. Did they not know that it was satire? How could they not know before they went on the show? Or were they playing along?
