Why does my flat screen suddenly show blotches during a show?

I purchased a 50 inch 1080p Panasonic in October .The picture was perfect. Just recently, blotches appear on the screen as if it is trying to update. Could this be from a Cable box? an HDMI cable is being used. It does not happen during a DVD? Could the box be the trouble?
