Why bash the other candidate?

Bashing the other candidate is nothing new. I'm used to that. There were nasty cartoons drawn about Lincoln by his opponents. What seems to have become acceptable, however, is bashing the supporters of the opposition candidate. It has really gotten out of hand, going so far as to question the patriotism of someone because they support a different candidate.
